Five signs you’ve outgrown your office

Bracken Workspace Plus Five signs you’ve outgrown your office
The average person will spend around 3,515 days at work over the course of their lifetime, that’s NOT including the extra 188 days of overtime! Your office is technically your second home, so when it starts to get on the small side, don’t just put up with it. Here are some tell-tale signs that you have started to outgrow your office.

1. Noise distraction is at an all-time high
Office + People = Noise. They come hand in hand and can’t really be avoided, however if you’ve recently recruited more people and found the noise has become a bit distracting, then it’s time to look for a new space. Productivity and morale can suffer when noise volumes become excessive, which is not good for you or your employees! Great ways to reduce noise in an open office are:
  • Carpet over hard floor - the softer material can help absorb sound.
  • Partition walls – while these aren’t the most modern looking way to decorate an open plan office, it’s a great way for stopping sound moving.
  • Plants – dotting plants around the office can help with sound, as well as improving oxygen levels, and generally making the office nicer to look at.
2. There’s no quiet space
A quite space in your office to hold meetings, make client calls or simply somewhere to get all of your ideas onto paper is a must in an office. A dedicated space allows employees to focus on the job at hand without any distractions or interruptions. If this space is lacking, it’s time to get on the hunt for your next space.

3. The conference room has become an office
Allowing a few employees to set up their desk in the conference room is a convenient short-term solution to the overcrowded office, but it’s not going to work in the long term. If this becomes a regular occurrence and you find you’re walking straight to the conference room to settle for the day, it’s time for you to pay attention to the little red flag that’s been waving and start to look for a bigger workspace.

4. Storage is getting a little tight
If your stationary cupboards are overflowing and your desk is piled up high, it’s either time to clear out your clutter, or time to look for a bigger office! A cluttered workspace has been shown to increase stress levels and disorganisation, which is not an ideal mix! This doesn’t just apply to the physical storage either, an increase in employees can have an effect on your digital storage too. Some signs that you’re running out of space can include:
  • Reaching your Dropbox limit
  • Running out of iCloud storage
  • Slow internet problems.
5. Your business has grown
We don’t want to state the obvious, but if you’ve been recruiting and your business has increased in size and you’re STILL trying to squeeze everyone into the same office space, a new office is calling your name! It’s important to put a hold on recruitment until you have a long-term plan in place, which includes a new office that can provide a comfortable and enjoyable space for your new employees to work in.
